Dear Log,

The horror... the horror...

Horror?

What's so horrible about esr attempting such a magnum opus? He's been talking about this for at least a good 3-4 years now.

Do you disagree?

Do you disagree with what he's saying? I'm not sure the horror. Or is it just ESR in general?

Unix

I'm afraid this book will end up being full of myths and other personal opinions. Here's a small example
Summing up: Perl's best side is as a power tool for small glue scripts involving a lot of regular-expression grinding. Its worst side is that it is ugly, spiky, and nigh-unmaintainable in large volumes. -- http://www.catb.org/esr/writings/taoup/html/ch14s04.html#perl

This is a ... horror. I've read through quite a bit of it and I agree with Sean. Maybe for different reasons.

It's a mish-mash collection of opinions disguised as a history of Unix and a lesson on OS design (with tangents off into culture and other irrelevancies). It's bothersome to me because he's got the authoritative sound but no real basis in fact of a sales job. I'm a huge fan of Unix, but I get the feeling that I'm being preached at by Goebbles. While I may ostensibly agree with some of the facts, I don't like where it's going.

The whole "why-to" instead of "how-to" simply provides a soapbox but I'm not sure what he's preaching. This is creepy.
