Once again I had an evening spoiled by Win XP, this time, plotting against the user with its evil cohort Kodak EasyShare.
I have discovered that when you run XP with multiple users and switch between them, XP gets confused about where it should show important or useful dialogs like those for sending a fax, connecting to the internet or configuring a printer. It also runs painfully slow when you have a handful of firefox and some other application windows on one account and any kind of modern came-with-the-hardware-easy-to-use-camera-stroke-scanner software on the other.
So after 3 attempts at copying files from my mother-in-laws camera to the new laptop (which still runs about half the speed of her old P2 w98 box) and draining her batteries as many times we checked the website and found the secret instruction (not in the manual or on-screen) that you have to set the knob on the camera to auto. This is important, because unless you set the knob to that the hard drive will whirr away and your battery will be flat in a couple of minutes.
So kodak and microsoft turn what should be an easy 45 minute browse and print into 3 or 4 hours of fucking about.
