So I sat down and dug into toke.c and perly.y and came up with a hundred-line patch which makes Perl 5 interpret variables like Perl 6 will. Don't ask me about it - in fact, general piece of advice: don't ask anyone who's just spent quality time with perly.y anything at all for a couple of days, eh?
