Apparently the LISP folks are beating us at our own game. They claim to have a perl-compatible regular expression matcher that is up to/on average 30% faster than Perl. They've even got pretty good documentation.
But I think Perl 6 regexes have those beat six ways to Sunday. (Pun intended.
