Because I have a colocated server, I have ended up hosting websites and email for friends. Over the past week there has been a base rate of 700kb/s usage on my mrtg graphs. I flipped some services, then remembered iptraf and fired it up. I was pushing 700kb/s over port 143, imap. I turned on info level in the dovecot config file, and I saw which account was making those requests. Turns out one of my friends was using Mail.app, and it was forgetting that it had certain mails cached. And refreshing it's cache constantly.
I'll be glad when I've migrated everyone off to Google apps... :)

Gmail supports IMAP now so you should still be able to use Mail.App.
