And the Larry said unto them, Fear not;
for, behold, I bring you good tidings of greater productivity, which shall be to
all people. For unto you
is born this day in the city of Portland a Perl Programmer,
who is Syber the Hacker (Book of Ovid 2:10-11).
A friend of mine has started programming and naturally, I introduced him to Perl. He started bombarding me with questions. At first, I answered his questions in depth and then slowly started started introducing him to perldoc and the CPAN. I was at his house last night and he unveiled his creation. This guy, who's only recently started programming Perl, had built an MP3 search engine that allows you to search his archive and built an MP3 playlist.
Logging into his site, he has a main page which displays Portland weather information. When I looked at his code, he was using LWP::Simple and HTML::TokeParser to grab a web page from weather.com. This was pretty darned cool stuff. His stuff looked like a lot of fun and makes me miss the days when I was first getting into the language. Heck, it reminded me of my days playing around with BASIC. If he keeps this up, he'll be applying for my job -- and getting it.
