I realized a couple years ago when starting to learn French and chatting with les mongueurs français that there are large communities of Perl programmers that, as an English speaker, I'm not familiar with. With the exception maybe of the more "famous" ones, I see them through a sort of filter, not as they really are; or I'm not even aware they exist.
One reason I've tried in the past couple years to learn some Chinese, and now German, is so I can hopefully some day interact with these communities "natively".
