How to secure Windows on a High Speed Connection

I have a dual-boot system. Sometimes I boot into Windows 2000 (though not if I can avoid it.) However, I recently set up my DSL connection and worried about how to secure Windows so as to minimize my exposure. After a bit of research, I found an "almost" foolproof method of making Windows secure while using DSL. I say "almost" because it does require manual intervention. If you're curious, here are the steps, from Linux:

  1. su
  2. /sbin/init 6
  3. At the grub prompt, select Windows but do not hit 'enter.'
  4. Quickly reach over and turn off power to the DSL modem.
  5. Hit 'enter.'

On a more practical note...

:)

ZoneAlarm works pretty well also.

I've taken to like Kerio. I did this because I was running sshd on windows using cygwin. Zonealarm doesn't like that.

Both have there charms. I'm trying to move all I can to linux and setup camp there, with a firewall.

The only secure computer...

I used to say that the way to do this was to cut the network cable: not unplug it, take out a knife and slice the wires so somebody couldn't reconnect it.

Then someone told me that the only secure computer was one that was turned off.

But that wasn't good enough for another friend, who said I would also have to encase it in concrete and drop it into the ocean, and then maybe, just maybe, there wouldn't be an exploit.
