Started using the Thunderbird email client. It's lightweight and fast; I appreciate that. What I don't appreciate is having a folder listed as having X number of new messages, but clicking on that folder and having all of them automatically marked as "read" and thus not being able to tell which ones are new. I can't figure out how to disable this "feature." Anyone know?

I just tried it on debian(linux) and it doesn't seem to be a problem their either. Sounds like it's probably an issue with the mail server.
