One of the founders of XYZ Find, an XML search engine and document retreival system, won the google programming contest.
His entry looks pretty interesting - using addresses in the indexed web pages to restrict searches to geographical regions.
He also has a nice paper on XYZFind from one of the structured information retrieval conferences.
Seems like a *very* smart guy.
