Dumb Mail.app bug

Matts on 2003-04-10T19:59:10

Lets say you configure Mail.app to send mail pretending to be from your hotmail account. When Mail.app connects to your SMTP server it takes your From address, strips off everything before and including the '@' sign, and declares itself:

EHLO hotmail.com
Dumb dumb dumb.

But...

At least it's a resolvable domain. :-)

And besides, does anybody do anything useful with the HELO/EHLO command?

One useful thing is to reject mail if the connection was introduced with (EHLO|HELO) hotmail.com or aol.com. (Because those services never introduce themselves that way).

How did you find out?

jonasbn on 2003-04-11T06:53:05

I use an external SMTP server, and sometimes it refuses to send my mail, so the mail gets stuck in the outbox.

It then tries repeatedly to send the mail without luck.

I have found out if I then open the mail and click 'Save as draft' it apparently resets something and the mail is delivered?

I would very much like to find out what goes wrong

I use Ask's qpsmtpd. I saw it in the logs. Might be worth trying it just so you can see potential changes in the envelope.
