Yep, a very sweet system for application delivery. You might have already seen this in action if you've downloaded Safari. Click download, wait a while, and all you see in the end is a Safari icon on your desktop (if that's your preferred download location). That is, the
.dmg is in the trash, should you wish to retrieve it, and the application package is sitting in whichever download location you've chosen in System Preferences. No mess, no clutter, but certainly a little disconcerting if you encounter it out of the blue (as most of us did when Safari first appeared).

Yes, when I first ran into this it really annoyed me. It still does, but at least I later found out the image was put into the Trash so I could copy it to my local archive. Still, I dislike the idea of the files being put around somewhere without my authorization etc. As long as the files are only dumped onto my Desktop, it is not so bad, though.

Wow, they've managed to take something massively overcomplex, add *another* layer of complexity, and end up with something about as useful as the Stuffit archive, which is, in the end, much simpler, and it has the added benefit that it actually works on Mac OS too!
Typical of the New Apple "Neat".
