Large OS X Files around

In my /var/log I see a few large log files, but don't know if I need them.

(kevin@gandalf):/var/log> # ls -lah total 48M

....

.DVDPlayerUpdate.pkg.337.upgrade.InstallationPlan -rw-r--r-- 1 kevin wheel 6.0M Dec 22 2001 .Developer.mpkg.2493.upgrade.InstallationPlan -rw-r--r-- 1 kevin wheel 10M Sep 19 2002 .IEUpdate.pkg.337.upgrade.InstallationPlan -rw-r--r-- 1 root wheel 24M Sep 18 19:24 .OSInstall.mpkg.66.upgrade.InstallationPlan -rw-r--r-- 1 kevin wheel 2.1M May 9 2002 .iPhoto.pkg.485.upgrade.InstallationPlan

....

I wonder if I can get rid of these. That space would be better used with MP3s. Anyone know if it is safe to hose these files?

Nevermind!

I decided to just call Apple and see what they say. After some research, the guy said they are safe to delete. I figured as much, but wanted to be sure. I do, however, wonder why they are there. If something is going to start plopping 24M files on my system for no good reason... I'd call that a bug.
