Hubris taken too far

Repeat after me, people:

The inadequacies of computers or the thought processes or knowledge of the people who program them doesn't ever justify telling people they need to change the way their native language works.

Unicode is not the solution. It's just the least distasteful and least lossy general fallback. If it's not your language, then shut up and deal.

Grumble, grumble, grumble...

Interesting Unicode article

The secret life of Unicode is an interesting article about the limitations of Unicode (and links to several equally interesting resources).

Yep, though they soft-peddle some of the downsides, I see. One thing that everyone seems to forget in the rush for programmer convenience is that Unicode is generally not the best answer for text in a single language, or primarily in a single language. (Usually exacerbated by the fact that Unicode is a superset of ASCII, so if ASCII works for your native language you tend to be a bit less familiar with or interested in other people's problems) The world's not insular any more, but most people still don't deal with much text outside their native language on a regular basis. (And for those that do, Unicode's OK, though often the native character set is still better)
