The Track Changes feature in MS Word is pretty sweet. I'm not sure how long it's been there but I love it!

I've seen MS Word (ver.2000, I think) brought to its knees by that feature. It's really similar to a RCS file, with a version being created every time you save. But I'm not sure it's made the read-efficient way (keep last version + backward difss): since it becomes slower with every save, I'd say it's made the write-efficient way (i.e. the other way around), just like the "quick save". And when you are working on the same file for three months (think master's thesis) the versions really add up...
