For long I suspected it, now I'm sure. There is an evil plot to get Belgium of the map! :D
Last night's episode of The West Wing brought up the whole Mercator versus Peters Map again. Apparently, the map geeks in the show didn't realize Mercator isn't German at all. He was flemish.. or rather born in the regions now called Flanders (being a part of Belgium), which used to be under Austrian reign around that time. What's next? People will deny the fact that Ludwig Van Beethoven was born in Belgium? There probably is SOME reason why it's Van and not Von :p
