Perl and LaTeX

I'm working on the final typesetting for the mod_perl 2 User's Guide. My brain is filled with style conventions, and index items, and installation options, Oh My! In the process, I've nearly tripled the size of chromatic's Pod::PseudoPod::LaTeX (a subclass of my Pod::PseudoPod), carrying it from the styles needed for a novel (text and headings), to the styles needed for a full-powered technical book.

I have to say, I'm really loving LaTeX. It has a package for everything. A bit like Perl, really. Also like Perl in its lovably quirky nature.

Which came first?

That comparison between LaTeX and Perl made me wonder: which came first? CTAN or CPAN? I knew TeX and CPAN first than Perl, but nowadays I don't use [La]TeX anymore. I knew it is evolving yet, even with help/collaboration from Lua which is key to the new pdftex.

I've always heard that CTAN was first.

Let's check that. According to this CTAN was thought up in 1991 and started in 1992. According to wikipedia, CPAN was founded in 1995.

I love LaTeX too

In fact, I've learned LaTeX first than Perl, and I love it. In a next YAPC::EU I could attend I might talk about LaTeX and Perl together.

Meanwhile, Allison, do you need reviewers for your book? *shame*
