Things you must try if you ever make it to Helsinki:
Is Salmiakki anything like that super-salty stuff they peddle in the Netherlands? Never could get a taste for it.

Semi-salty anise-flavored stuff with a licorice texture. Delicious!Re:Salmiakki?

Yes, as the dutch claim to have invented it. It's like licking a licorice volcano.:) It comes in so many varieties that surely there is one that you could love. Re:Salmiakki?

Well, for that to happen, I'd probably have to develop a taste for licorice first and that's not likely to happen any time soon. I remember my boss in Amsterdam eating ankh-shaped licorice and offering me one. It was pretty horrifying and everyone laughed at the silly American as I spat it out -- not that I blame them.

Yeah, that's the usual reaction the expats around here have and they give me a hard time since I'm addicted and I often take several bags of the stuff with me when I travel.:) Oddly enough, I never liked American licorice, but my mother is German who always made terrific anise cookies for the holidays and she adores the stuff too....so maybe it's genetic :)
