Strawberry Perl January 2009 Release (just in time)

Alias on 2009-01-29T18:30:05

Strawberry Perl January 2009 is now out.

This cycle is a family of 10 variants, made up of Strawberry Perl 5.10.0.4 (.exe, .zip, Portable and D: versions), Strawberry Perl 5.8.8.4 (.exe, .zip and D: versions) and for the first time, Strawberry Perl 5.8.9.0 Beta 1 (.exe, .zip and D: versions).

Even though the 5.8.9 release is tagged as a beta, it SHOULD be of full production quality. But since I haven't had time to throw it out and let it stew for a month for testing, I'm labelling it Beta just to be safe.

This release mainly contains an update of the bundled modules, and there's no real reason to upgrade if you already have the October release.

The exception to this is if you need PPM support.

The PPM configuration was broken in October, but January will fix this so that your ppm client does what you expect.

This will hopefully be the last time we release in .exe form.

Thanks to the astonishing contributions from Curtis Jewell the new 4th generation .msi builder is starting to get close to the point where we can create an alpha release.

By the next release in April, Loki willing, we should be close to the point where we can release the production builds as .msi installers, allowing company-wide installation via ActiveDirectory for the first time.
