If you're reading this, you should be familiar with Strawberry Perl. You may even have heard about the mythical "Chocolate Perl", a (hypothetical for now) "no command line" distribution that contains a GUI CPAN client, GUI perldoc, a Perl editor/IDE, and a "standard library" of the most popular, robust and cross platform CPAN modules (like DateTime, Template Toolkit, Imager, Catalyst and so on...).
While we're still some way away from a Chocolate build (the main blocking bug at the moment is getting a stable CPANPLUS release that supports configure_requires) you can get inkling of what it might be like today.
While putting together the new January Strawberry release, I also managed to put together an installer for what we could call "Padre Standalone".

Padre Standalone is the Padre IDE layered onto a Strawberry install.
The alpha is only available as a system install at this point, so you can't install it while you have any other Perl distribution installed.
There's also no GUI launcher yet either, you'll still need to Start -> Run -> padre.
But hopefully (assuming it works for you) it should give you some idea of what Chocolate might look like, a single installer that can take you from nothing to a full GUI development environment in under a minute.
