So this post was originally called "So you've decided to modify UNIVERSAL" and discussed why it's mostly a stupid idea to change UNIVERSAL, and how to do it right if you are left with no other choice...
Except that after writing it and going to select some text, I accidentally triggered a near-undocumented AdBlock feature I didn't know existed.
If you have AdBlock installed in your Firefox (almost everyone at this point) and you hold down shift and double click on something (like an unclickable image or a big textbox with about 15 minutes worth of typing in it) AdBlock will helpfully remove it from the page!
Irretrievably, at the DOM level...
So there goes that Journal entry, and I really couldn't be arsed typing it all over again.
But now you've read the main part of this journal entry, try this out. It get's weirder.
When you shift-double-click, hold the mouse button down after the second click.
Now you can drag your mouse all over the page and it's a DOM eraser, painting the page out of existance!
Of course, shift-double-click doesn't work on anything that's clickable, like oh... ADS! And they leave this stuff on by default with nothing in the options dialog to turn it off. grrrr
