JPL (an acronym of sorts which now means Java/Perl Lingo), a bit of magic from Larry Wall that allows a programmer to use Java and Perl together, was released as Open Source software in the perl5.005_54 development release.
At The Perl Conference in August 1998, Gina Blaber, Director of Software Products at O'Reilly, announced that JPL, which was released in November 1997 as part of O'Reilly's Perl Resource Kit, Unix Edition, would be released as Open Source software.
