In my hot little hands today arrived O'Reilly's Perl CD Bookshelf, Version 3.0. It's a nice upgrade to the previous version, and weighs in at seven books, covering 4,100 pages, at USD 119.95. Update: 11/09 04:01 GMT by P : A typo said the price was USD 199.95. It's not. It is USD 119.95.
It has added four books (Learning Perl, 3rd Edition, Mastering Perl/Tk, Perl & LWP, Perl & XML), removed two (Perl for System Administration, Advanced Perl Programming), and upgraded another (Perl in a Nutshell, 2nd Edition, which is also included in a paper version). And returning are the standard texts Programming Perl, 3rd Edition and Perl Cookbook.
I think I'd rather have Mastering Regular Expressions, 2nd Edition than a book on Tk, as I don't use Tk. Oh well.
I got my copy today, and as I keep all my reference CDs on my home web server (no, it is not publically available, all you leeches and lawyers), I popped out the CD so I could copy it over. The CD was stuck to the inside of its sleeve, leaving a sticky residue on the the outer edge of the disc. After wiping it off (the writing on the disc is all on the inner portion anyway), I copied it over, and started perusing. It is much like the previous versions (without the other two books, so I am keeping Perl CD Bookshelf, Version 2.0 around too). It has the same Java-based search, which still crashes Mozilla. My kingdom for a CGI/mod_perl program that could read the same index files set up for the Java program. Maybe I should just set up htdig to search my reference folder anyway.
At least that is what O'Reilly's website says.
