Parrot's now officially functional

Dan writes "If you've been waiting for that one last necessary bit to be done before kicking in to start hacking in Parrot assembly, your wait is over. The latest CVS version of parrot now can open, close, read, and write from files. The interface isn't final (the print and readline ops are hackish and will be removed when the real I/O system's done) but it's enough to work with if you're so inclined."

Reminder: Development Grant Fund for Dan Sugalski

I look forward with keen anticipation to what will come from Parrot.

Just a reminder to everyone out there who is looking forward to what Parrot will bring to Perl 6 and whoever else can use what will undoubtedly be a fine piece of technology, there is an ongoing Perl Foundation Development Grant Drive for Dan Sugalski, the internals designer for Parrot.

If, like me, Perl has benefitted you or professionally or personally or both or if Perl has benefitted your company's bottom line, I encourage you to contribute as I have.

And with only 1 day to take advantage of the donation for your 2001 taxes (I'm pretty darn sure the donations are tax-deductible, but someone correct me if I'm wrong), it is the perfect time to contribute :-)

The perl foundation's a 503(c)(3) non-profit, so whatever rules apply, well, apply. (I think it's tax-deductible, but I won't swear to that. And, of course, it'd depend on your country of origin)
