search.cpan update

hfb writes "A lot of people seemed to notice that search.cpan was a bit unusable earlier in the week due to molassas-like performance. I have some good news :)

Over the weekend I built another box and, in the process, reindexed the database as it will now index and display the modules that have PC carriage returns in them. It should be more accurate and more complete now. However, this did contribute to the slowness on the original box as it had to regenerate the HTML from the PODs."

The second box went into service yesterday at it's new home at Webster University thanks to Ben Hockenhull :) The load is already evening out and so far it looks like search.cpan will be much easier to use. There will be a third box coming on line in August once the hardware I ordered for it arrives.

So, in spite of the slowness earlier in the week we now have:

  • Proper indexing of the Win32 modules
  • Ability to read the PODs where it used to generate a 404 due to the CRs
  • Another box to even the load out which means faster service and less wait.

Please thank Ben Hockenhull and Webster University for giving the box a new home! :)

Yeahoo!

I didn't want to complain about the slowness of search.cpan.org because it was just so damn useful, it was worth the wait.

Thanks! Now I can find the POD file for Acme::Bleach soopa fast!
