Curl is a company founded by WWW originator Tim Berners-Lee and director of the MIT Lab for Computer Sciences, Michael Dertouzos. See a story about it at ZDNet and check out the documentation. Unfortunately, most readers of this site may not be able to use it yet, as it is only available for some platform I've never heard of (something called "Windows").

Wonder how long it will be until we see patent infringement letters flying around and that whole prior art argument.

Nice name choice. There are already 7 projects on Freshmeat using the pre-existing, and highly useful tool 'curl' which is a command line tool for getting data from a URL. Owners of that project are likely to be upset by your name-choice. Just so you know, here are the projects, and their freshmeat.net URLs (this was just a quick search, there may be others):

"Your name choice?" (As far as I know) the company "Curl" and the sender of the original story are unrelated, expect that the sender knows Curl. So nobody in this forum has chosen "Curl".

As for the claim "the name was already in use": tough. I fail to see the relevance of a free command line url tool and a web browser programming language having a name collision.

I guess pretty much all even remotely pronounceable four-letter words have been taken for something or another anyway, and "curl" is a real English word, so collision is even more likely.
