Our lovable CPAN librarian, jhi, writes in that Siemens has released SiePerl, a binary package of perl 5.005_03 for Linux (Intel RPM), Solaris (Sparc pkgadd), and Win32 (Zip). It includes a lot of prebuilt modules, and will periodically be updated by the kind folks at Siemens Business Services as the included modules (and, once in a while, Perl) get updated. http://www.cpan.org/ports/ has 'em all.
Why Only 5.005.03 ?

Siemens has
released SiePerl, a binary package of perl 5.005_03
This is all very altruistic and lovely and everything but why an older version ? I think we should be told :)

Maybe because you can get binaries of the current version (Perl 5.6) and a lot more modules from ActiveState. But there are no 5.005_xx binaries available from ActiveState for Linux or Solaris. And some people have to continue to use 5.005_xx for various reasons. Just guessing though.

I'm only just guessing but for those who can't tell a European company from another: the saying goes "Siemens is a bank which also has some other businesses". Which means that they are financially really strong, and German: all this easily amounts to being really slow/conservative/careful.

Indeed,
We have to use 5.005_03 at present for various reasons, although I am currently working on the updated builds for 5.6.0
