Software Development Times Covers Perl 6

Dan Sugalski sent in a heads-up about a story in the Software Development Times about Perl 6. Nathan Torkington, Dan Sugalski, and some guy named Brian D'Foy are quoted.

Interface with CORBA?

edwin on 2000-09-15T14:26:40

I don't understand the article. Interface with CORBA has been already in existence for a long time with Perl 5. See COPE which is implemented in Perl, or CORBA::MICO, or CORBA::ORBit. IMO, the Perl binding in CORBA::ORBit is nice enough, compared with the existing standard bindings for C++ or Python. It is not far from them.
No need to wait for Perl 6, no need to wait for a stable Perl 6. Or am I missing something here? please someone explain this for me. Thanks.

Consider the target audience for this magazine. Yes, CORBA/COM integration's already possible, and yes it's not taking up spot #1 on the "Gotta Have It" list, but doing it better would still be nice, and the article certainly doesn't mis-represent anything.

When one writes for a magazine, it's best to write articles that slant towards the general readership. The bias in this article's not at all bad, and the author went to some considerable trouble to get things correct. If the article had been for OracleWorld, for example, I'm sure DBD::Oracle and general database connectivity would've seen a higher profile.

End result is we got a nice, properly researched, positive article in a place with good visibility. I, for one, am rather happy with it. :)
